Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for many patients with end stage renal disease in whom a successful kidneys transplant improves the quality of life. However, not all patients are appropriate candidates for this therapy because of its risks and limitations.
The donor should be healthy, have same blood group and preferably be a blood relative of the patient.
There is also a big shortage of organ donors.
After transplant, lifelong medicines are required along with periodic checkups with kidney specialist to avoid rejection of the transplanted kidney.
